I was 17 years old when I lost my Grandpa, Hubert Britton, to prostate cancer. His cancer had metastasized to his bones and because of the pain, some days he couldn’t walk. My dad bought him a very slick tricycle. It was blue with a basket in the back and had very wide wheels. He loved his trike. I remember one day he rode through the local Show n’ Shine to look at the redone cars, he was so thrilled when the guys would look at his trike rather then the cars. The trike enabled him to move around without a wheel chair when he was in too much pain to walk.
My Grandpa was an amazing man; always positive and slow to anger. He was a patient, giving, kind, smart man. I realize that most people will say that about their Grandpa's, but for Hubert, just stating this wouldn’t be enough. He was an amazing and unique son, father, brother, uncle, and grandfather.
My Grandpa once told his friend, in front of me, “Kieren can do things most others can’t.” Those were some of the last words that he said to me, and I will never forget them. I want to prove Grandpa right.
I realize I can never get my Grandpa back, but I can give to all those grandpa’s that may need just a little more time or hope.
